Layer 3 Routing Performance

Dynamic Routing and Throughput Performance

The European Advanced Networking Test Center (EANTC) evaluates and certifies the performance and robustness of dynamic routing implementations of IP routers or for complete IP networks. EANTC's test services for dynamic routing are tailored made for:

  • Network Equipment Manufacturers benefit from EANTC's independent, unbiased tests for internal quality assurance and product verification. We can evaluate your product to independently confirm data sheet numbers or to demonstrate the performance attributes in a use case scenario. If all tests pass, EANTC can issue a certificate that the vendor may use for marketing purposes.
  • Service Providers and Enterprises
EANTC's commissioned tests verify that routers are able to learn, maintain and update large amount of network prefixes at the same time. Our custom tests implement your specific routing scenario to prove true performance evaluation under realistic conditions. We use dynamic routing updates and full traffic loads simultaneously to assure thorough network availability during critical business hours.
  • Test Procedure
We prepare detailed test plans, based on our test catalogue and your individual requirements. The tests may be carried out in our lab in Berlin or at your site. An experienced team of test engineers and project managers will conduct the testing and provide a detailed report including analysis and results interpretation, and technical recommendations.
  • Test Catalogue
Our generic test procedures are applicable to the complete family of exterior and interior routing protocols (e.g. BGP, OSPF, ISIS, EIGRP, etc.). Following tests show our typical test procedures that can be adjusted to your requirements:
    • Route Capacity Test
Measure the maximum number of routes the system under test (SUT) is able to use for its forwarding decisions. Fill up the routing table and verify correct and loss free forwarding decisions for each single route under a heavy traffic load. Make sure that the routing table is large enough for your needs and routing performs as you expect.
    • Route Convergence Test
Verify fast and reliable route convergence for vast quantities of IP prefixes. Measure the packet loss and latency impact during the convergence process. Avoid long out-of-service time caused by slow and instable convergence, assuring loss free high performance routing.
    • Continuous Route Flap:
Test continuous route flaps to expose weaknesses in the router's implementation. Continuous route flaps are common in networks and should not impact the forwarding process of non flapped routes. Verify how many routes can permanently be flapped without side effects on overall device or network stability.
  • Your Benefits
For manufacturers, our measurements confirm the quality of your product development.
With the independent certification by EANTC you demonstrate the high quality of your products to your customers.

    For network operators
(service providers and enterprises), our evaluations ensure that your product choices will meet your individual performance, reliability and scalability requirements allowing you to safely deploy the solution in your network.
