Tender tests and consultancy for a multi-service ATM / MPLS carrier network - EANTC helping Kapsch AG

Our customer
Kapsch  is a system supplier of public and private communication networks and intelligent traffic telematics solutions. The Austrian company, which has been family-owned since it was founded in 1892, is the parent company of the international Kapsch Group.

Kapsch is directly represented by subsidiaries, holdings and branches in twelve European countries, with marketing partners in other countries and continents. Their performance in the core fields of public networks, corporate networks and traffic control systems covers a range of services. These include planning, engineering, development, production, installation and commissioning of complete solutions for speech/data communication, (networks, systems, equipment), as well as project management, consulting, training, service and maintenance.

Project aims
The aim of the project was to demonstrate the performance characteristics of NortelNetworks Passport 7000 / 15000 ATM Multi-Service Switches within the framework of a call for tenders by a carrier customer.
In the first instance, EANTC drew up a full test plan together with Kapsch AG. During this process, Kapsch AG was able to draw on the detailed knowledge of EANTC regarding test strategies for ATM, IP, MPLS as well as speech quality. Possible test scenarios were selected and test configurations were subsequently drawn up.
Finally, EANTC carried out the test scenarios in the test laboratories of Kapsch AG. Part of this testing process was in the presence of the carrier customer and the results were made available for all parties in a detailed test report.

Description of the unique network
The network components that were to be tested were located in the laboratory of Kapsch AG and simulated an ATM multi-service carrier network with core and edge areas. This simulation involved coupling a TK-system and the integration of E1/E3 multiplexers to carry out measurements of speech quality.
